Opera is our passion and our cause. We don't like to see Opera being shoved into a shameful corner and forced into a hoity-toity box. It should be free to shine and be available for all!

Our HOPERAs will always be presented in a local language and will be feature film length at movie ticket prices. We're always coming up with new and crazy ideas, so these are sure to be one-of-a-kind original arrangements and productions!
As One – In Partnership with the Montrose Center
HOPERA presents the Houston premier of As One in partnership with the Montrose Center and supported by Eureka Heights Brew Co this November 2024. As One tells the story of Hannah, a transgender protagonist, on her journey of acceptance, belonging, and eventual self-realization in the face of adversity and doubt. Celebrating its tenth anniversary, this contemporary chamber opera for two voices and string quartet was composed and created by Laura Kaminsky with libretto by Mark Campbell and Kimberly Reed. This production is presented in partnership with the Montrose Center, a community center established in the 1970s focused on empowering members of the Houston LGBTQIA+ community to live healthier, more fulfilling lives.

Performances will take place at Eureka Heights Brewery and the Montrose Center the week of International Transgender Day of Remembrance to honor the memory of transgender victims of violence. Eureka Heights will be brewing a special beer to be served at both performances, and a portion of all ticket and beer sales will be donated to the Montrose Center.

The Producer – Our HOPERA of the Year
Closing the season with a burst of humor and creativity, HOPERA presents The Producer, a fresh and playful adaptation of Mozart's classic opera Der Schauspieldirektor. This updated version, infused with modern sensibilities and a cheeky twist, reimagines the tale of rival sopranos vying for top billing, set against the backdrop of the competitive world of opera. HOPERA’s modern English production will also include surprise guest cast members, and perhaps a familiar tune or two.

The Producer promises to be a delightful experience, combining Mozart's timeless music with a new narrative that is both entertaining and accessible. This production will also feature interactive elements, encouraging audience participation and breaking down traditional barriers between performers and viewers.

CARMENcita is a distilled arrangement of Bizet's classic opera with tank-fresh English text by Hopera’s founder Megan Berti. Each venue is turning their tasting room into a theater for a night of heroic highs and limitless lows - both emotional and musical - as you sip along to a tale of love and lust, hope and betrayal, freedom and death! Come see why Bizet’s Carmen is one of the most performed operas of all time, boasting melodies so famous they are recognized by opera lovers and opera newbies alike. Seating is limited, so grab your $18 tickets now!
This live musical drama lasts 90 minutes with 1 intermission and will be performed entirely with Houston-based artists in partnership with local craft businesses 8th Wonder and Eureka Heights. There will be limited edition specialty beverages available to the audience, so remember to bring your IDs! All are welcome to attend, but we give this show a recommended PG-13 rating because of suggestive material, some strong language, and simulated violence. Both performances are funded in part by the City of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance and the City’s Initiative Grant.
